Horizon Middle Academy

BUILDING BRIGHT HORIZONS FOR GRADES 6-8

UPDATE:
The Horizon Middle Academy Planning Committee regrets that we will have to postpone the opening of the school - August 2009. After working countless hours attempting to open the doors for the upcoming school year and carefully considering every possible option, we have decided that we need an additional year to complete the facility and secure additional funding to meet instructional goals. We are committed to maintaining the integrity of our program. We cannot successfully meet the needs of our students at this time,  but we still strongly believe in our vision. We are confident that we can achieve this vision for the 2009-2010 school year. We hope you will continue to participate in the development of the school. We invite parents to be active members of the Planning Committee. Also, we still intend on holding elections for the Charter Board in October. We feel fortunate to have more time to recruit quality teachers and create more opportunities for teachers to develop curriculum. We look forward to our August 2009 opening - a true learning community! We will post updates and future meeting dates on the website - stay tuned!

Horizon Middle Academy is a public charter middle school set to be developed on Johns Island for August 2008. The school is sponsored by the South Carolina State Charter School District and not CCSD. Therefore, the school will not receive any local funding used by CCSD schools. The school will use innovative and proven instructional methods found in the best public and private schools in the country. The development of this school offers parents a true choice for grades 6, 7, and 8.

The school will offer a more individualized and holistic approach to education. We believe in educating the whole child and fostering a positive sense of self while providing a challenging curriculum based on individual needs and interests. There will be a strong emphasis on project-based learning, technology, the arts, environmental stewardship, and community service.

The facility will be built off Brownswood Road near River Rd. The school hours will be 7:45 -4:00. The student population will be limited to 350 students. The school will serve students on Johns Island and students residing in Charleston County. Applications are now being accepted - April 28th deadline or until capacity.
